A group of pregnant mums have put their bumps and brains together in protest of construction work on a huge housing development they claim has blighted their lives.

The women, of Strathville Road, Earlsfield have been joined by many of their neighbours angry with problems they associate with the development of Westfield House, in Knaresborough Drive.

Wandsworth Times:

Pregnant mum Lizzie Harrop set up a petition to request the diversion of traffic away from a part of Strathville Road, due to the consequences of having large, noisy trucks trundling down the road.

She said: "The HGVs have created dips like ski jumps before and after the speed bumps which mean every car that passes along Strathville Road scrapes the bottom of the car on the bump and we the residents have to hear this all night long."

The group are also concerned that builders are not obeying official guidelines and operating as early as 5.20am.

Since starting her petition Mrs Harrop has discovered six women living nearby are also expecting babies between July and September.

She added: "At the moment it is impossible to sleep during the day and it is very stressful to think about what lies ahead."

She has written to council leader Councillor Ravi Govindia and ward member Councillor Kim Caddy to offer them a house swap for the duration of the development so they can experience the trucks waking them up early in the morning.

Building work being carried out includes demolishing the existing building and building three separate buildings with 194 flats and a cafe facing King George’s Park. The proposal also includes a new riverside walk, 152 car parking spaces and 230 cycle parking spaces.

A spokesperson for Linden Homes South East, developing the site, said: "With every development we build, we endeavour to be as considerate as possible to all residents in the vicinity of each site. The site currently under construction in Earlsfield is no exception.

"We can confirm that the construction team are continuing to work within the strict parameters of the planning agreement.

"Further to the concerns raised by the local residents, we have already and shall continue to consult the local community to ensure that their thoughts are considered.

"Any damage caused to the roadway as a result of the construction works will be assessed and repaired accordingly."
