Nine Elms is hoping to cement its status as ‘London’s newest cultural quarter’ as it plays host to a programme of events for the third Chelsea Fringe.

It will become a horticultural hub on the South Bank running for three weeks from May 17, with events designed to showcase the green heritage of the area.

The focus will be specifically on celebrating community gardening activity and taking part in tours around the New Covent Garden Flower Market and throughout the surrounding area.

Programme director at Nine Elms on the South Bank, Helen Fisher, said: "Chelsea Fringe first came to Nine Elms last year with a programme of activity at Battersea Power Station.

"This year, we are delighted to be able to support such an extensive programme of events, celebrating out rich horticultural history, as delivered by our local communities."

A mini pop-up forest will be created with the use of a 30 trees in portable containers situated in the middle of Vauxhall Island from May 24-31, after which the trees will be planted in the surrounding area..

A family fun day at Vauxhall City Farm will be held May 25, with games, crafts and activities to encourage all attendees to get into the green fingered spirit, with the chance to take home a starter kit to grow vegetables and salad on any handy window ledge.

Visitors to the farm will also have the opportunity to catch quirky performances by London Vegetable Orchestra.

For those who would like to see more of the area with a dramatic twist, May 17 will see White Rabbit Walks taking Fringe goers on a theatrical performance walk from Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens to Battersea Power Station.

As part of the Fringe there will also be a chance to talk to the landscape architect behind the creation of the linear park, which ties together the new developments in Nine Elms on June 7 and 8.

The Chelsea Fringe will take place at a host of different venues and setting across London, featuring community celebrations, events for those with a passion for gardening, and public spectacles.
