The Furzedown Festival has returned and is building to another Big Day Out.

Founded in 2002, the low-key event has expanded to take in a fortnight through June, kicking off last week with a launch party outside the Furzedown Project 93 on Moyser Road.

However, have no fear, the main event is yet to fire, with everything now gearing towards Saturday’s Big Day Out Festival committee member Tim Kahn says: “It all started with one local person organising a community picnic on the recreation ground. I seem to recall there was one clown in attendance.

“It has grown since then, to the point where we had some 2000 plus attending our Big Day Out.”

Guests to the bonanza on Furzedown Recreation Ground can expect tennis, skateboard and scooter coaching, table tennis, tug of war, a huge cake-off, and live music bringing sounds such as beat boxing, soul music, folk songs and traditional Indian stick dancing to name a few.

The festival is financed by Wandsworth Borough Council as well as through money generated by the committee during the year.

Chairwoman Suzanne Ellis says: “Even though the council generously gives us a grant for the festival each year, it does not cover the costs of a largely free event for the community.

“We put in £2,000 to fund the festival, which we make by fundraising throughout the year.”

Running simultaneously is the Flower Festival at St Paul’s Church from noon to 4pm, and then in the evening the Welham Road church will host a Midsummer Evening Concert of light classical music.

Other activities to look out for include a ghost walk around the City of London, leaving Tooting Broadway at 6.30pm on Tuesday, Garuda and adult body conditioning sessions, a couple of garden gigs and an antiques valuation session.
