A mental hospital serving people across south west London has received a glowing review from a health watchdog.

Springfield Hospital, in Tooting, is celebrating after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) described its services as ‘safe and well-led’ and found staff were compassionate.

The only concerns noted in the report were assessing and managing people’s safety after a patient, using the service, was able to stand and jump from a window ledge during the CQC inspector's  visit which began on March 17

The report, published last week, praised staff saying they were caring and had a good approach to patient care.

David Bradley, chief exec of the South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, said: "We are grateful to the inspectors for their root and branch examination of our services and for recognising the excellent work provided by our caring and professional staff.

"The inspection was tough but very fair and gave us the extremely valuable opportunity to examine the services we provide and look at how we can make them better for patients, carers and our staff."

The hospital trust has had recent controversies including the escape of a paranoid schizophrenic, who stabbed a stranger 20 times, absconded from the unit in March and a patient who killed themselves on a hospital ward also in March.

Mr Bradley added: "I am proud of what our staff have achieved and we will never be complacent in making our services better. We are very aware that there is a great deal of work still to be done and we are ready to meet the challenges ahead."

While obviously congratulating them on the mainly positive points, surely they can not have given good marks for the security of the site. Some times it seems that they have more runaways at Springfield than Ford Open Prison.
Only some of the Springfield escapees are seriously more dangerous to us, & to themselves of course. Too many have ended their lives on the Tube & train tracks locally, which while it solves their problems must cause terrible heartache to their families.

The report had to be good as this is just about the only facility left for Sutton patients as Belmont, Sutton and Banstead Hospitals have been shut down.

I agree with jacqueline..I've lived in tooting all my life and know people that have been been mentally unwell. Springfield is a hospital to treat sick people. it's not a prison?! Time to Change campaign is about tackling stigma and discrimination that people face. Over a third of the public think people with a mental health problem are likely to be violent -in fact people with severe mental illnesses are much more likely to be victims, rather than perpetrators, of violent crime. Someone told me that years ago people with Cancer were treated like outcasts - I hope that people will change their views about mental health - like they have about Cancer.

It's important to know the facts. Here are some good links.

thankyou for agreeing not many people have in clinical governance at the trust i put forward that phyciatrists explain to children why their parents are ill to reduce stigma because if a child is educated so are their friends too. the police deal with mentally ill people and maybe put them in the cell for the night this should not happen thats why a 24hr crisis house is required so th for replying e rght people can deal with their problems and a diagnosis is made thankyou

all trusts should get to ban electric convulsive therapy ect within the hospital and get the government to compensate for people who have had it.i had it at 17 on a underdeveloped brain and it has caused many memory problems and headaches since 30 years ago. they knock you out first then put electricity through your brain its absolutely barbaric and they still do it but only in extreme cases theres no proof it works just theory

by putting a conclusion about all the things ive witten today mental illness has to be reconised at an early stage to prevent future generations suffering stigma and illness themselves by educating in schools or phychiatry our children.
