The youngsters also got to meet the Prince of Wales who was handing over his 40-year presidency of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) to his eldest son.

Prince William spoke about his hopes for his son George to follow in his footsteps and donned a wetsuit to go snorkelling with the youngsters.

Reann and Perry were later presented with a certificate by the Prince of Wales.

Reann, from Wandsworth, said: “To go snorkelling with the Duke of Cambridge has been a great privilege and honour which I won’t forget for a long time.”

Perry, who lives in Kensal Rise, said: “The Duke seemed really friendly and made us all feel at ease.

“There was one, really funny bit where Prince Charles threw the fake, plastic crab we were using as part of the session at William from the side of the pool and we were all laughing.”

The Duke of Cambridge said: “I hope that one day my son, George, might follow in our footsteps. At the moment bath time is a quite painful but I imagine as he gets a little bit older donning a snorkel and mask might calm him down.

“I look forward to working with BSAC to encourage even more young people to dive - to help develop the next generation of underwater explorers, pioneers and protectors.”
