Detective Constable Adele Cashman, a Crime Squad officer based at Kentish Town Police Station, collapsed while pursuing a teenage phone thief in Belsize Park Gardens, Camden, at about 9.45pm.

It is understood the police officer was chasing at least one thief who had stolen a mobile phone from a elderly lady when she collapsed to the floor.

The suspect was eventually caught by a colleague.

Chief Superintendent David Chinchen, Wandsworth Borough Commander, said: "DC Adele Cashman was an extremely able and dedicated officer, and her loss has had a significant impact upon a number of staff on the borough who have received the terrible news this morning.

"Our thoughts at this time are for her family, friends and colleagues."

DC Cashman, who had worked in both the Camden and Wandsworth areas, was taken to Royal Free Hospital but died just after 11pm.

The 30-year-old joined the Metropolitan Police in 2006 and was stationed in Wandworth as a police constable for four years.

She became a detective constable in 2010 and moved to Camden Police Station.

In a further tribute to their fallen comrade officers at Battersea Police Station lowered the MPS flag to half mast.

Camden Borough Commander Tony Eastaugh described her as a "much loved and wholly dedicated officer".

He said: "The thoughts of everyone in the Metropolitan Police Service are very much with Adele's family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.

"Adele worked on both Camden and Wandsworth boroughs and was held in high regard by all who met her - she will be sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her.''
