Over 90 people attended a moment in history on Wednesday, November 6, at Oakgrove, Berkeley’s development in Caterham, where a time capsule was buried.

Attended by local residents including school children, the capsule will be opened in 25 years’ time in 2038.

The contents of the time capsule included a range of 2013 memorabilia, contributions from Clifton Hill School and Hillcroft School, music and film charts of the day, Oakgrove’s marketing brochure, famous buildings completed in 2013, the front page of the national and local papers, and a book dating from the 1900s’ with postcards of Caterham.

Pupils from the two schools took part in the time capsule project by completing activity packs during their summer holidays, which were then entered in to a competition, with the top three from each school placed in the capsule.

Matthew Biddle, managing director of Berkeley Homes, said “We’re extremely proud to play a part in bringing the Caterham community together, for a fantastic morning that the children will remember for years to come. Our work with the community surrounding Oakgrove is extremely important to us, and we were absolutely thrilled with the number of people that turned out to take part in the time capsule event.”

Councillor Eithne Webster, said: “The time capsule is a wonderful idea for Oakgrove. St Lawrence’s Hospital was an important part of the history of Caterham-on-the-Hill and it is fantastic to think that here, today, the items being buried and this ceremony will be history for tomorrow’s residents. Don’t forget a date for your diaries in 2038!

“I would like to thank Berkeley for its support for the project. It was wonderful to see such a great effort made by everyone involved. I am particularly delighted that the project involved local schools; there were some fantastic entries from the children.”
