Comedy songs warbling away in Teddington

An evening of comedy songs made famous by old time comedians such as Rob Wilton, Max Wall and Benny Hill will be echoing round the walls of Teddington's beautiful Victorian theatre this month.
Showbiz veteran Gordon Peters brings his show to the Normansfield Theatre as he takes a trip down memory lane with classic songs from yesteryear, as well as original numbers covering topics as diverse as sat-navs, chastity belts and Lady Godiva.
Peters, who lives in Kingston and whose CV includes acting roles on Little Britain, Dad's Army and Are You Being Served, is teaming up with his musical sidekick David Carter to bring an affectionate nostalgic tribute to a golden age of comedy and music hall.
“It is an opportunity to air some of these brilliant songs,” he says. “We had such success with our other shows, all on one subject - Noel Coward, Flanders & Swann and Gilbert & Sullivan - and this show offers us the chance to cover the waterfront. Also the patter I do in between the songs means I can talk about anything that comes into my head, which leads to a great informal night.
“Choosing the songs was very difficult as there are so many to choose from. Some I have come across myself, others have been passed to me by audience members after the show. The latest one, about a sat-nav, arrived as a poem by email. We have put it to music and it will, I hope, prove a very topical number.”
The show is a co-production with the Langdon Down Centre Trust. Victorian physician Dr John Langdon Down - the “father of Down’s syndrome” - established Normansfield in 1868, building the theatre for patients to learn music and drama as part of their education.
