I had quite high hopes for The Other Woman, mainly because I have always enjoyed Leslie Mann in many of her husband's (Judd Apatow) comedies such as when she played the wife in Knocked Up (2007), the same wife in This is 40 (2012) and as Eric Bana's wife in Funny People (2009). To be fair she did play a spaced out 'Hippy Chick' who throws up on Steve Carell in The 40 Year- Old Virgin (2005). I am a genuine fan of her work and the same goes for Cameron Diaz who has developed into a comedy Movie Queen and is not only blessed with sex appeal but also blessed with great comedy timing. Who doesn't like the classic There's Something About Mary (1998) and Bad Teacher (2011)?

Wandsworth Times:

But here's the thing, I really wanted to like this movie but it was as if somebody up there was saying "Sorry mate but this isn't for you!"

The plot of the film is a quite simple. After discovering her boyfriend Mark (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is married, Carly a high flying successful lawyer (Cameron Diaz) tries to get her ruined life back on track. But when she accidentally meets the wife he’s been cheating on (Leslie Mann), she realises they have much in common and her sworn enemy becomes her new best friend. When yet another affair is discovered (Kate Upton), all three women team up to plot mutual revenge on the cheating three-timing toad.

I can understand that the message is about friendship and dare I say 'girl power'. But I think this could have been done so much better. The comedy is far from subtle and contains a great deal of slapstick humour but in their defence Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz do have a natural rapport and work well together as Leslie mentioned in a recent interview with her. Not sure why Kate Upton was chosen to appear in this film, apart from the gratuitous running along the beach in slow-motion wearing a bikini scene which sort of veers away from the sisters are doing it for themselves theme.

Wandsworth Times:

I felt that the character of the good-looking conceited, cheating husband Mark could have been played by any  good-looking conceited actor and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was completely wasted (not literally) and underused. If you want to see him playing the bad guy check out the brilliant Norwegian thriller Headhunters (2011) from best selling author Jo Nesbo. Some of the revenge dealt out to Mark by the trio includes the use of a great deal of laxative and some painful diarrhoea moments. I guess a Lannister always does pay his debts!

Wandsworth Times:

The girls clearly had a huge amount of fun making the movie and despite my opinion an awful lot of women will just love this comedy and it would certainly be a good girls night out. Oh! did I forget to mention that he award winning costume designer for Sex and the City was responsible for the actors wardrobe?... I think that's just clinched it for some of you.

Wandsworth Times:

My favourite moment in the film was the Tyler Durden reference by Carly (Cameron Diaz).

For me it has to be a 2 out of 5, Foker On Film stars
