South London boasts a trio in the shortlist of Britain’s best fish and chip shops.

The Village Fish and Chips’ in both Petts Wood and Sanderstead made the 60-strong shortlist for the National Fish and Chip Awards, as did Brockley’s Rock in Brockley.

All three shops will now compete against each other, and a further four, to be made  London and South East England’s regional winner.

The winners from each region will then fight it out to be named Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year in the Seafish-organised competition.

To get this far, the shops have been judged on criteria such as their responsible sourcing policies, marketing and promotional practices and staff training.

Experts disguised as shoppers will visit each shop in the coming weeks as the line-up is whittled down to the top 20.

Seafish chief executive Paul Williams said: “It’s great to see so many excellent shops through to this stage of the competition.

"I’d like to offer up my congratulations and wish them the best as they prepare to continue their quest towards winning a regional title, but also thank them for consistently helping us to reinforce the UK’s reputation as the home of the world’s best fish and chips.”

An awards ceremony will be held in London in January.
