Tasting menus are one of the capital’s latest food trends so we popped into Slug and Lettuce’s attempt to bring more ‘picky’ food to the borough.

The bar opened in Sutton High Street, between Morrisons and O’Neill’s, in September last year following a £500,000 makeover.

At the time general manager Nathan Hatwell said he hoped to keep customers satisfied by offering 2-4-1 cocktails every day of the week as well as a selection of bottles of wine at a reduced price.

But enough about that, I’m sure you want to know what did we actually think about the place.

Atmosphere 4/5:

The staff were friendly and were attentive when we mentioned that one of our party had a nut allergy. There was good backing music that did not intrude in on our conversation.

Drinks 4/5:

Slug and Lettuce Sutton has introduced a skinny Prosecco, which tastes like the ‘normal’ one, but has 75 per cent less sugar and about half the calories. It is only £2 more than the standard bottle, which is good considering how much it can cost in some places.

The cocktails on offer are two for one, but there is a catch. They have to be the same cocktail. Bar staff also offer cocktail masterclasses where customers can create two drinks as well as a Jäger-train.

Food 4/5:

The sharing menu is aimed towards larger parties who want to have something to nibble on to tide you over while you drink.

All of the food was fresh and tasted lovely. The food wasn’t greasy, which is good considering that a lot of the food we ordered had been battered or fried.

What food and boards did we try? Welsh rarebit, chorizo, fish board, chicken board and the vegetarian board.
