Chef Patron Malcolm John has evoked a little Mad Men era glamour with his new Jazz Bar in Putney.

The Michelin and Egon Ronay rated chef and restaurateur wanted to create a relaxed Soho-style music bar for his customers south of the river.

So Malcolm launched the Thursday evening event in the chic basement bar of his Fish and Grill Restaurant on Putney Bridge Road.

“The aim of the Jazz Bar is to create somewhere stylish where people can enjoy a great cocktail, good food and little live music with their conversation,” said the Croydon-based chef.

“It’s the only one of my restaurants with music, and already clients have said how much they like to come here for drinks before enjoying a meal upstairs in the restaurant. I think it adds something special to the while dining experience.”

On the busy launch night celebrated soul and jazz guitarist Sonny Black and bassist Chris Belshaw entertained the crowd with a mix of “jazz-lite” songs.

Malcolm served his guests snacks of beautiful Malden Rock Oysters, White Bait, Black Pudding Scotch Eggs, Crab Mayonnaise, Fish and Chips in a Cone and homemade crisps seasoned with sea salt and sea weed.

We drank sparkling Prosecco, but there’s an extensive wine list and a menu of new and classic cocktails to try including Martinis, Margaritas, Kir Royale and Peach Bellini.

The basement bar boasts an impressive copper ceiling, with plush, set back lounge areas and ambient low lighting.

The classic oak bar with a mirrored back drop, is a nod to old style luxury clubs. In fact, the bar was formally a 1960’s nightclub and also rumoured to be the regular set for the classic detective series ‘The Minder’.

The area will be available for private functions, business functions, and seminars with bespoke menus available on request.
