Marvel’s superheroes are returning to the big screen en masse this month in Captain America: Civil War – including the first outing for Kingston actor Tom Holland’s take on Spider-Man.
The movie, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, sees Captain America (Chris Evans) squaring off against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jnr) when they disagree on an act regulating superheroes.
Other heroes fall into the conflict, including Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Ant Man (Paul Rudd), Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).
Sony, which owns the rights to Spider-Man, reached an agreement with Disney which will see the web slinger appear for the first time in Marvel’s shared cinematic universe.
Nineteen-year-old Kingston actor Holland, who studied at Wimbledon College and Croydon’s BRIT School, was cast last year and will play Peter Parker and his arachnid alter-ego in his own solo movie titled Spider-Man: Homecoming next year.
He won the role – taking over from Epsom actor Andrew Garfield – after impressing Marvel and Sony producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal with his performances in The Impossible (2012), Wolf Hall and In the Heart of the Sea (2015).
Tom’s first big break came when he was cast in the West End version of Billy Elliot in 2008 after being spotted at Richmond Dance Festival aged 12 with his school, Donhead Wimbledon College Preparatory School.
Speaking to us as he promoted In the Heart of the Sea in December, Tom told us becoming Spider-Man had not changed his life a great deal at that stage.
He said: “When I come home I’m still Tom, I still have to do the dishes and clean my room. I’m probably the same person I was two years ago.
“I can see my life changing on the horizon but right now I’m just taking every day one at a time and enjoying walking down the street and stuff.”
