She may have won countless awards, chopped off her hair, lost loads of weight and battled depression, but Anne Hathaway has been unable to escape bad press.
And her offence? Being herself.
Her “too perfect, goody two-shoes” image must be contrived, her “humility” in acquiring many accolades for her role in Les Miserables must all be an act masking arrogant smugness.
Those big innocent hazel eyes? They must be fake too.
And what about the her shocking last-minute switcheroo to a Prada dress for the Oscars last year, after she found out that Amanda Seyfried would be wearing a gown very similar to the Valentino number she had picked for the occasion? Utterly unacceptable.
So submerged we are in this rising tide of hate, we have actually forgotten some of the great things the actress has done and achieved.
1. After marrying her beau Adam Shulman in 2012, she sold her wedding photos and gave ALL the money to Freedom to Marry, a pro-gay-marriage organisation.
2. The talented actress is one of those very few people to have won an Oscar, been nominated for numerous Oscars, sang at the Oscars and hosted the Oscars.
3. The 32-year-old has a wicked sense of humour and did this amazing Claire Danes impression on Saturday Night Live.
4. After taking on the role of Selina Kyle, aka, the morally questionable Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, Anne spent ages training in martial arts to live up to the role.
5. She has earned her stripes as an extremely versatile actress, playing a beautiful princess (The Princess Diaries), a fashion journalist (The Devil Wears Prada), a drug addict (Rachel Getting Married), an astronaut (Interstellar) and even Jane Austen (Becoming Jane) with professional ease. You name it, Anne’s already done it.
6. She is among an elite group of actors who have won an Academy, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe, a SAG, and a Critic’s Choice Award for a single performance (Les Miserables).
7. Anne’s got beauty as well as brains! The actress attended liberal arts school Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, before transferring and earning her undergraduate degree from New York University.
8. Not only can she act, it seems the gifted actress can also sing. Apart from her stunning performance as poverty-stricken Fantine on Les Miserables, she has also performed on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and sang on Ella Enchanted. Oh did we mention she can rap too? Check her out on Conan on TBS.
9. Nope, we have never seen a nip slip, wardrobe malfunction or even a hint of a fashion faux pas at glamorous events. Anne has always nailed the red carpet and has managed to look classy, timeless and trendy at the same time.
10. Anne was raised a Roman Catholic but her relationship with the Catholic Church changed at the age of 15, after learning her elder brother Michael was gay. She told Contactmusic in 2009: “I realised my older brother was gay, and I couldn’t support a religion that didn’t support my brother. Now I call myself a non denominational Christian, because I haven’t found the religion for me.”
11. While supporting her brother, Anne had her own demons to battle. She has, quite candidly, spoken of her experiences with depression during her teenage years, revealing that she eventually overcame the disorder without medication.
12. She is involved with numerous charities, including The Creative Coalition, The Step Up Women’s Network, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Human Rights Campaign, and The Lollipop Theatre Network.
