There’s nothing worse than an awkward run-in with a old flame. For most of us, it’s easy enough to hide behind a tree, pretend to be on our phones or start power-walking in the opposite direction. But for these celebrity exes, it’s going to be a lot harder to avoid the garbled small talk when they’re face-to-face with a former partner at one of this season’s many award ceremonies.
With the Golden Globes, the Oscars and the Academy Awards all on the horizon, here’s the celebrities we’re secretly hoping might have a cringeworthy red carpet run-in at one of this year’s many awards bashes.
Helena Bonham Carter & Tim Burton
After an impressive 13 years of marriage, everyone’s favourite Hollywood goth couple called it a day back in December. The couple met back in 2001 when he directed her in the remake of Planet of the Apes, and although they never tied the knot, they have two kids together: Billy Ramond, 11 and Nell, 7.
How awks is that gonna be? According to a rep for Bonham Carter, the pair “separated amicably earlier this year and have continued to be friends and co-parent their children,” so we’re unlikely to see any stormy glares thrown on the red carpet.
Chris Martin & Gwyneth Paltrow
After “consciously uncoupling” in March last year, Chris and Gwyneth spent Christmas together along with their two kids, Apple and Moses, in the Hamptons. Their close friendship sparked rumours that the pair were set to consciously recouple – until Chris was spotted on a cosy sushi date with are-they-aren’t-they gal pal Jennifer Lawrence…
How awks is that gonna be? Last week, Heat magazine reported that Chris and Gwen were set to take on a hardcore New Age detox after Christmas at a spa in Palm Springs. The question is: what does Gwen think of Chris’s naughty sushi binges with Jen? Will she pelt J-Law with bunches of kale on the red carpet?
Jennifer Lawrence & Chris Martin
The pair were linked last year, shortly after Jen’s split from Skins star Nicholas Hoult, and have been spotted cosying up on several dates together since.
How awks is that gonna be? With Chris’s complicated links to ex wife Gwyneth and J-Law’s rumoured romance with Hunger Games co-star Liam Hemsworth, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for some major red carpet tension.
Jake Gyllenhaal & Reese Witherspoon
You might have forgotten about this Hollywood couple, but they were together for three years before splitting in 2010, when the actress reportedly dumped Jake for her agent, Jim Toth. Reese and Jim are now wed, and Jake has gone on to charm a long line of ladies, including Taylor Swift, Lea Seydoux, Rachel McAdams and Anna Kendrick.
How awks is that gonna be? Both Jake and Reese are nominated for a Golden Globe award, so we’re counting on some spectacular red carpet side-eye.
Kate Hudson & Matt Bellamy
After a three-year engagement, Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy announced their split on the Muse frontman’s Twitter. But that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped hanging out – Bellamy and Hudson spent Christmas in Aspen together and have been spotted out and about in Los Angeles several times since the “breakup”.
How awks is that gonna be? Probs not very, considering they’re still so chummy. But after Kate was spotted on a cosy dinner date with Dancing With the Stars heartthrob Derek Hough last month, rumours started flying that the actress had already moved on.
Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson
The Twilight sweethearts split after THAT cheating scandal in 2013, and Rob has since moved on to effortlessly cool pop newcomer FKA Twigs. The pair narrowly missed each other at the Hollywood Film Awards back in November, because Rob skipped the red carpet, but these two can’t avoid a run-in forever.
How awks is that gonna be? Seeing as these two can’t seem to stand being in the same room, a run-in could be potentially pretty awks.
Antonio Banderas & Melanie Griffith
After 18 years of married bliss, the Hollywood superstar couple hit splitsville last year, releasing a statement which said: “We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalise our almost 20 years’ marriage in a loving and friendly manner.” We’re wondering how long that manner will stay friendly, as Banderas was spotted at the Cannes Film Festival in May with a beautiful young blonde on his arm.
How awks is that gonna be? The pair are set to reunite on upcoming sci-fi thriller Automata, so we’re guessing they’re on speaking terms – unless Antonio rocks up with another young lady by his side.
Zooey Deschanel & Jamie Linden
New Girl star Zooey told screenwriter Jamie that it just wasn’t working out back in August, after two years of adorkable romance. However, the actress seemed to have no qualms about moving on quickly as she was spotted with new beau, Jacob Pechenik, two weeks later.
How awks is that gonna be? We’re guessing poor Mr Linden probably isn’t too happy that his ex-gal is already so publicly loved up.
Olivia Munn & Joel Kinnaman
They were a match made in TV heaven: he’s homicide detective Stephen Holder in the Killing, she plays socially awkward economist Sloan Sabbith on the Newsroom. But sadly, the pair called time on their romance last year after two years together. These two are reportedly still good pals, although Olivia’s since moved on to Gren Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodger.
How awks is that gonna be?? Apaz not very, seeing as they reportedly ended on good terms. But with Olivia’s romantic history including flings with Jamie Foxx, Chris Pine and Justin Timberlake, we’re bound to witness some sort of an awkward run-in.
Jennifer Aniston & Brad Pitt
No awkward celebrity exes list would be complete without mentioning the epic love triangle of Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. In 2008, Angelina opened up to US Vogue about how she and Brad fell for one another on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith, which Jen later slammed as “really uncool” and “inappropriate”. Then there were the rumours that the pair were planning a “showdown” at George Clooney’s wedding (which turned out to be a nothing but a silly rumour).
How awks is that gonna be? Jen recently told CBS Sunday Morning that she and Brad do occasionally speak, but made no mention of Ange. We’re still secretly hoping for a showdown at one of this year’s ceremonies.
