Graham Norton is an obvious fit for hosting the TV Baftas – the perfect blend of warmth and acerbic wit.

And while his gags seemed to be going down well enough in the room at tonight’s ceremony, the watching public weren’t so sure.

Here’s a selection of Graham’s gags from his opening monologue…

“The election results are in and the country is largely blue. Very blue. Really, really blue.”

“We bid farewell to Clegg, Miliband and Farage. On the up side, the makers of Top Gear have had an idea.”

“The general public – so close to showbiz fame and yet so far. A bit like the winners of the Voice.”

“I really enjoyed watching the Fall. I’m sorry but it’s not every day you see Madonna go down like that.”

“Poldark is of course a drama about a Cornish miner. It’s done very well for the BBC and it’s the first positive story they’ve had about a miner for years.”

We chuckled along merrily, but it seems we were in the minority.

And those, it has to be said, are some of the more polite reactions.

Graham did have a few supporters though.

And what about his beard? Well, that got a mixed reaction.

And then there was this guy…

There was some definite good news for Graham – his chat show won an award for best Comedy and Comedy Entertainment Programme.
