In the ever-changing world of TV talk show hosts, David Letterman has been a constant for so long that the thought of him packing away his interview desk seems impossible.

But sadly, the King of Chat will sign off from The Late Show With David Letterman for the final time tonight, and the world of celebrity grilling will be the poorer for it.

Let’s take a wander down memory lane with Dave and remind ourselves just why he’ll be so sorely missed on TV.

Bill Murray

Funny man Bill was David’s first ever guest and the pair hit it off so well that he became a regular guest over the years.

He even returned for a special tribute as one of Letterman’s last scheduled guests, jumping out of a cake to surprise him.

Cher

Cher was a slightly less willing guest in 1987 and shocked the audience as well as the host when she called him an a*****e.

She gamely agreed to come back recently and make an apology – but watch what she couldn’t resist saying again.

Tina Fey

Comic and actress Tina has been one of David’s most popular guest choices over the years (as she claims, because she “lives close by and people cancel a lot”), but her most recent appearance was her most memorable.

Tina exposed just what goes into being able to wear a skin-tight dress on a talk show, and vowed never to don one again.

Drew Barrymore

David had a birthday to remember when Drew came in to chat with him.

She leapt up onto his desk and performed a birthday dance for him, before appearing to flash him.

Joaquin Phoenix

The actor has been a Letterman guest a few times, but in this most famous appearance he displays an odd look and an even odder attitude.

In a follow-up show, he claimed it had been performance art.

Paris Hilton

When Paris Hilton agreed to be a guest on the show, she couldn’t have known it would end up being this much of an uncomfortable experience.

The socialite kept repeating that she didn’t want to talk about jail time – but of course, that wasn’t going to stop David from asking.

Farrah Fawcett

From the moment he announced his guest, David must have been worrying about the amount of stumbling that went on backstage as Farrah made her way out.

She made for an entertaining, if chaotic, guest, but it didn’t put her off returning over the years.

Borat

Sacha Baron Cohen is famous for being interviewed in character while promoting his films, so when he got the Letterman call in the run-up to Borat opening, it was obvious who he would come as.

His usual mix of awkward moments and entertaining wit was an instant hit with the chat show audience.

Lady Gaga

No one expects Lady Gaga to be just the standard talk show guest, but David probably didn’t expect her to eat his notes…
