Singer Avril Lavigne broke down in tears as she spoke to ABC News about having Lyme Disease.

In the interview, an emotional Avril speaks about the doctors who didn’t take her health problems seriously initially.

She said: “I was seeing every specialist and literally the top doctors, and … they would pull up their computer and be like, ‘Chronic fatigue syndrome?’”

“Or, ‘Why don’t you try to get out of bed, Avril, and just go play the piano?’ … This is what they do to a lot of people who have Lyme disease. They don’t have an answer for them so they tell them, ‘You’re crazy’.”

The star, who is married to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, went on to say she’s now on the mend, and is halfway through her treatment.

She said: “I think for me it’s like a second shot at life,” she said. “I want to go out there and truly do what I love, so I’m excited for life after this.”

Avril first revealed she’d been diagnosed in an exclusive interview with American celebrity magazine, People, in April this year.

Following her interview, she wrote on Instagram: “Driving around after a big morning with my GMA interview. Cried on national television this am. So embarrassing. Lol. Thankful to God that I am recovering, finally getting on with my life and ready to help other people.”

She explained how she started feeling sick while away in Las Vegas last year where she was celebrating her 30th birthday.

She told the magazine: “I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed. My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”

Avril went on to say: “I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying.”

“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”
