It’s a hard life being a soap star when members of the public have a go at you for your character’s misdeeds – and Hollyoaks’ Nick Rhys, who plays Lockie Campbell, has revealed he had quite a run-in while out shoe shopping.

He recalled: “I was trying on some shoes, and the shop assistant was there, and then this woman – she was quite smiley, she was like: ‘Hi! I can’t believe you’ve cheated on your wife’ – really, really loud.

“And the shop assistant was like: ‘Ugh you horrible man’.”

Things got even worse for poor Nick, as the woman continued: “Yeah! With your cousin!”

The soap star beat a hasty retreat, telling the shop assistant: “These are a bit small, they’re pinching, I’m gonna go.”

Unfortunately for the Hollyoaks star, he doesn’t have much chance of avoiding awkward situations any time soon, as the latest episode on the Channel 4 soap revealed Lockie was cheating on his wife Porsche (Twinnie Lee Moore) with her cousin, John Paul McQueen (James Sutton).

Not only that, but he is also discovered snogging John Paul’s sister, Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe).

“Whether or not it’s right or wrong, he definitely enjoys it,” Nick explained, comparing Lockie to Teflon: “Nothing sticks. People have very short memories in Hollyoaks.”

The unfaithfulness comes after Porsche has been pushing her husband away and the two have been struggling with their relationship – but, according to Nick, this doesn’t mean he loves his wife any less.

“Bizarrely he does actually still love Porsche. That was the underlying part of playing this whole thing really, was that he genuinely does still have feelings for her.

“It was like: ‘I’m getting pushed back and rejected from my wife, so this is why I’m doing it’.”

John Paul and Lockie have managed to cover up their affair for now by telling Porsche a tall story about her husband having a gambling addiction, but this won’t be the last of it.

Jennifer also revealed that the cast had to make up their own story to explain why Mercedes and Lockie were suddenly kissing behind the bins, despite no previous hint of romance.

“That was news to us as well. So we’ve had to make up our own back story, and we probably reckon that they got wrecked one night and – no time like the present, and just went for it.”

Hollyoaks continues on Channel 4 and E4.
