The 72nd Venice Film Festival has kicked off, and the Floating City is packed with film stars, including Johnny Depp, Kristen Stewart and Ralph Fiennes.

Here’s our highlights from the prestigious event so far.

1. When Kristen Stewart wore THIS beautiful dress.

Arriving at a premiere screening of her latest film Equals, the Twilight actress sparkled in a grey lace and satin Chanel couture dress and super-high silver stilettos – though she kicked them off later to go barefoot.

2. When Johnny Depp looked (unintentionally?) like Buddy the Elf.

During the photo call for his latest movie, Black Mass, Johnny looked distinctly like Will Ferrell’s character Buddy, the star of Christmas comedy film Elf. We presume this was in no way deliberate.

The actor looked far more dapper later in the day, posing with co-star Dakota Johnson – who was pretty in pink.

3. When Shia LaBeouf got really giggly with his movie pals.

The actor stars in Man Down, which is competing in the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons section for new discoveries. Shia got giggly during the photo call with director Dito Montiel and co-star Nick Jones Jr, and said he’d agreed to act in the film because he got to work with friends.

“I want to work with people that I have a connection with,” he admitted. “I think for a while I was chasing the 10 list, right? The 10 directors you want to work with — and that didn’t fare well for me.

“I do much better with loving, familial environments where you feel like you can fail and the dude will get you on the other side. So I’m trying to make friends now and work with those people.”

4. When Tilda Swinton was a woman of few words.

Tilda Swinton stars in tragicomedy A Bigger Splash, but she revealed her condition for taking the role: she would hardly speak at all in the film.

“It was a moment in my life when I really didn’t want to say anything,” the enigmatic British actress told reporters. “Even less than I do now.”

Tilda plays Marianne Lane, a rock star ordered to rest her voice after surgery. Tilda said that as a performer, she couldn’t resist the idea of silencing “someone whose entire career has been about her voice”.

5. When Ralph Fiennes showed off his dance moves.

Tilda’s co-star in the movie was a lot less restrained. Ralph couldn’t stop dancing at the photo call, and he busted some moves later on the red carpet.

The actor displays his comic flair in the movie, where he performs an all-out solo dance to the Rolling Stones’ hit Emotional Rescue. According to Ralph, the script simply said that his character “gets up and dances and expresses himself completely through dancing”.

“I’d never been asked to do that on a film before,” he said. “And so I said ‘yes, thank you’.”

6. When Eddie Redmayne turned up to promote his latest movie, The Danish Girl.

Eddie looked casual in a shirt and jumper and sunglasses, but we’ll soon see him transformed on screen into the first known recipient of gender reassignment surgery, Lili Elbe.

7. When ex-Python Terry Gilliam tried out some unusual poses on the red carpet.

The Monty Python star turned up to the premiere of Black Mass – and was his typically unconventional self.
