Despite the 40-degree heat on the red carpet, last night’s Emmys went without a hitch.

On a night of laughs and surprises, it was hard to tell what was the biggest talking point – Andy Samberg’s hosting, Tracy Morgan’s return or Jon Hamm finally bagging a win.

Here’s your cheat sheet to the top Emmy moments.

1. Andy Samberg’s Mad Men skit

It was his first time hosting, but Andy Samberg more than proved he had the credentials. After kicking off with a great opening sketch poking fun at the number of TV shows up for awards this year, he moved on to a monologue that skewered everyone from Donald Trump to Bill Crosby.

But he stepped it up with his Mad Men parody. Andy did his own version of the show’s final scene where Don dreams up the iconic 1971 Coke ad – until it ended with him murdering Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet.

2. Viola Davis’s speech

Emmy history was made as How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis became the first black woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She gave an emotional shout-out to fellow stars including Empire’s Taraji P Henson and Scandal’s Kerry Washington.

Viola invoked a famous quotation by Harriet Tubman and her own empowering words. “Let me tell you something: the only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there,” she said.

3. Ricky Gervais’s fake win

Ricky decided that if he couldn’t win an award, he was darn sure going to be pictured looking like he had. Cue Ricky stealing the show as he carried an Emmy on stage, held it aloft triumphantly and mock sobbed. “Thank you so much! Thank you!” he blubbed.

4. Jon Hamm’s win

Finally – finally – Jon Hamm won an Emmy! After eight years and eight nominations, Jon took home the gong for his role as Don Draper in Mad Men. Jon couldn’t hide his excitement as he scrambled up on stage and said: “There has been a terrible mistake.”

And to make the moment even more special, it was presented by his friend and 30 Rock co-star Tina Fey. Since this year marked his final outing as Don, it was about time he won!

5. Tracy Morgan’s return

Tracy Morgan made a surprise return to the stage in his first major public appearance since being seriously injured in a car crash last year. Tracy was met with applause and laughter as he proved he was back on form with his triumphant speech: “I suffered a traumatic brain injury that put me in a coma for eight days, and when I regained consciousness I was ecstatic to learn I wasn’t the one who messed up,” he joked.

“Only recently have I started to feel like myself again, which means a whole lot of women are going to get pregnant at the after party,” he said.
