One Direction star Liam Payne applauded The X Factor’s Reggie n Bollie for their infectious version of What Makes You Beautiful.

The 22-year-old was a famous face in the crowd as the Ghanaians brought the house down with their rendition of the One Direction smash hit, mixed with Cheerleader by OMI.

Head judge Simon Cowell said: “On paper, this shouldn’t have worked, but I absolutely loved it. The vocals weren’t perfect, but it didn’t really matter.”

BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw cried: “I never thought I’d dutty wine and skank to One Direction!” He then asked Liam for this thoughts.

“He didn’t like it, he loved it,” the DJ said.

For her critique, girls mentor Rita Ora shouted: “Mash it up, mash it up, mash it up, boom!”

Reggie n Bollie’s mentor Cheryl Fernandez-Versini danced her approval as the duo told hosts Olly Murs and Caroline Flack: “We are over the moon, seeing Liam from One Direction, we love you!”

The X Factor contestants sang live to win votes from the public. This week’s theme was titled ‘reinvention’ and saw the acts tasked with taking a classic song and making it their own.

Here’s how the night unfolded.

The 18-year-old sang Return of the Mack by Mark Morrison. “I have to give it to Rita, that was a fantastic song choice,” observed Cheryl.

However, Simon disagreed: “Personally, I wouldn’t have done that song.”

Lauren Murray – Girls

The 25-year-old dental receptionist from Essex impressed with her version of Hold Back The River by James Bay.

“I love the light and shade you put into the song,” said Cheryl.

“Tonight, it’s the best I think I’ve heard you,” Simon agreed.

Radio 1′s Nick said: “That looked like a winning performance. It was brilliant, well done.”

Louisa Johnson – Girls

The 17-year-old from Essex tackled Michael Jackson classic Billie Jean and won huge praise from the judges. “Your vocal blew everything else on that stage out the water!” exclaimed Cheryl.

“You are ridiculously good. I love moments like this when we can discover someone like you,” said Simon.

Mentor Rita was very pleased: “Mash it up, mash it up, mash it up, boom!” she shouted.

Monica Michael – Girls

The X Factor’s comeback kid dressed in a revealing gold gown and belted out Beyonce’s Crazy In Love.

However, she sparked arguments among the judges. “I didn’t love this, I hated it. They’ve turned you into something you’re not,” said Simon.

“Well don’t give us this theme, then!” Rita snapped back.

Simon continued: “What have they turned you into? What you did last week was incredible, that was reinvention,” he said in reference to the Londoner’s version of Make It Rain by Ed Sheeran.

“You’ve put more effort in to the other girls than you have with her,” the X Factor boss accused.

Judge Rita told her wildcard act: “You should be proud of that.”

The backing singer may win an award as the show’s most emotional contestant, but he held it together despite the panel not liking his version of All About That Bass/Bang Bang by Meghan Trainor and Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, respectively.

“That was like watching a really bad musical. I don’t know if that head butt made Simon go crazy,” said Nick.

Cheryl continued on the same theme: “Maybe Simon’s getting his revenge back for the head butt.”

Anton’s mentor defended his song choice: “The theme this week is called ‘reinvention’, not Karaoke, girls.”

Max Stone – Overs

The Londoner performed Somewhere Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World by Judy Garland and Louis Armstrong, respectively, but divided the panel.

“I think you’re cooler than that. You should speak to your mentor about doing something a little bit cooler because that was like watching Play School for me,” said Nick.

Simon berated the Radio 1 DJ and judge Rita: “Forget these two, you did great.”

4th Impact – Groups

Opening the show, Filipino siblings 4th Impact made a big impact with their rendition of Sound of The Underground/Boom Clap by Girls Aloud and Charli XCX, respectively.

X Factor boss Simon said: “It was fantastic!” However, he accused groups mentor Cheryl of “narcissism” for choosing one of her own songs.

The former Girls Aloud singer’s response was to blow a loud raspberry. In another bout of banter on the panel, Radio 1′s Nick said of fellow judge Rita’s attire: “Halloween was last week”.

She responded: “It’s called fashion darling, you will not know anything about it.”

Che Chesterman – Boys

It’s hard to believe Che Chesterman is only 19 thanks to his mature vocals. The 19-year-old’s rendition of You Can’t Hurry Love by The Supremes won a standing ovation.

“You absolutely smashed it!” cried Poison singer Rita.

“You have a place in the market right now,” Cheryl insisted as Simon joined the love-in: “You’ve got taste and that really means a lot,” he told the teenager.

Seann Miley Moore’s theatrical performance of California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & The Papas did not meet Simon’s approval. “Seann, you have an amazing presence and a spectacular voice, but that was lazy.”

The panel disagreed: “It was stunning to watch,” said Rita. “You perform with every ounce of your body,” agreed Cheryl.

Nick defended his act: “It’s not something you see on a talent show, it’s something you see on the Grammys or the MTV Video Music Awards.”

Mason Noise – Boys

The controversial contestant was originally axed from the competition for rowing with Simon, but his song choice of Teardrops by Womack & Womack won praise from the judges.

“Performance-wise, for me, that was great!” Cheryl cried.

“I’m going to have to agree with Cheryl,” Simon said. “Tonight, you had that confidence. There’s no one like you in this competition.”

The fate of the contestants is now in the public’s hands as two acts will leave the competition this week.

The X Factor is broadcast on Sunday November 8 at 8pm on ITV.
