Sir Michael Caine admits he has never seen the much-derided Jaws 4

The third sequel to Steven Spielberg’s Jaws was panned on its release in 1987 and nominated for seven Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies).

The unofficial sister-ceremony to the Oscars honours the worst movies and performances.

Jaws 4, also known as Jaws: The Revenge, won a Razzie for worst visual special effects.

“I’ve never seen it,” Sir Michael, 83, said on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show.

“Somebody said, ‘Have you ever seen Jaws 4?’ I said, ‘No. But I’ve seen the house it bought for my mum. It’s fantastic!’”

He added: “The bleeding shark didn’t even work on that. I thought we were in trouble when the shark didn’t work. You see the shark and a guy comes out of the mouth with a spanner!”

The award-wining star, who described himself as “a yobbo from the Elephant and Castle”, reflected on how his success was kick-started by increasing roles for working class actors in the 1960s.

“I did a movie called The Ipcress File, a spy movie years ago, and I got a very good review for it,” he said.

“I was waiting for the reviews to come out and the first one was wonderful for me and I thought, now I’ve got a career.”

Speaking about his favourite film, Sir Michael chose Alfie. He won universal acclaim for the 1966 classic about a promiscuous cockney.

“I suppose Alfie has to be the one because it made me a star in America as well, and it was my first nomination for an Academy Award,” he observed.

The Londoner also said Cilla Black’s famous title song wasn’t in the original movie.

“When that film went to America, Burt Bacharach saw it in a preview, wrote the song and put it on the end titles.”

During the interview, Sir Michael and Ross discussed another classic film released in 1969.

“The Italian Job was an amazing thing for me because I had no driving licence,” the Get Carter star said before admitting his stunt double was a tall blonde woman in the stunt driving team.

Reflecting on the changes in parts as he has aged, Sir Michael told Ross: “At 83, you don’t get many offers of leading parts in movies, you usually play grandpas.”

He added: “You don’t retire from movies. Movies retire you.”

Sir Michael appears to have escaped this fate as he remains a working actor. His career spans 60 years and shows no signs of slowing down.

In 2014 he featured in Colin Firth’s Kingsman: The Secret Service and he has just completed Now You See Me 2, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman.

Married to his wife Shakira for 43 years, Sir Michael shared his recipe for a successful union with Ross.

“The secret of marriage is two bathrooms. You never want to share a bathroom with a woman.”

Creed stars Sylvester Stallone and Michael B Jordan, and Sue Perkins from The Great British Bake Off, also joined Sir Michael on the sofa.
