The Ghostbusters trailer is the most disliked in YouTube history and its star Melissa McCarthy has said she finds the promo clip “confusing” – what else can possibly go wrong for the forthcoming reboot?

Directed by Paul Feig, the film reunites him with Bridesmaids stars Melissa and Kristen Wiig alongside Saturday Night Live regulars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

Speaking on iHeartRadio’s Johnjay and Rich show, 45-year-old Melissa admitted that the concept for the trailer went over her head.

“It’s a reboot. It’s weird that they said the ’30 years ago’ because in the movie the first (1984′s Ghostbusters) didn’t happen.

“The trailer said, ’30 years later’ which I didn’t get myself … believe me, the question was asked. I was like, ‘I think that’s very confusing’, but then everyone said, ‘We don’t care what you think’.”

On YouTube, the trailer has recorded 700,000 thumbs-down votes, and counting.

Many fans of the original Ghostbusters, which starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, the late Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, never wanted a remake.

The main debate sparked by the film across social media and in opinion columns, appears to centre on the switch to a female cast, with detractors accused of sexism.

But critics have hit back at the claims of misogyny, saying their problem is with the movie itself.

Director Paul offered his take on the brouhaha: “Some of it is that people don’t want an old property touched – I’m sympathetic to that.

“But the ones who are hating it because it’s about women? That’s just a non-starter,” he told The Guardian.

The fuss has continued on Twitter as fans take to the social media site in droves to express their dislike of the trailer.

We’re not gonna call the new Ghostbusters
