Kate Hudson has admitted her relationship with Matthew Bellamy isn't easy, but has said that the couple work on making it last.

The actress and the Muse frontman, who have a two-year-old son together and got engaged in 2011, were reported to have been through a rough patch earlier this year.

The Wish I Was Here star told Self magazine: "Relationships are the most challenging things. It's where you do the most work in your life.

"You come face-to-face with yourself, and if you can deal with realising we're all flawed, accept it and work with it, you might have a really amazing, lasting relationship," E! News reported Kate as saying.

Kate, who was once married to The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, father of her oldest son Ryder, added: "If I look at my parents (Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell), who've been together 30-something years, I'd say no matter what they've been through, they share similar values and really like each other. It sounds easy, but it's not."

Kate also said that she took her mother's advise and honoured her female friendships.

"My girlfriends are so important to me," she said. "They've been my rock-solid foundation."
