FORGET spring because for those of us in tune with American TV dramas it is officially Mad Men season.

With only a matter of episodes left - ever, yes ever - fans are watching the last moments of their favourite on-screen characters in a state of emotion that hangs somewhat precariously between excitement and grief.

A self-confessed sufferer of the well-known Mad Men fever myself, my interest lies as much with what the likes of Don Draper, Peggy Olson and Joan Holloway are wearing as what they are saying or doing.

Having already tracked the changing lives and styles of New York's advertising world throughout the 1960s, now we're into the even more colourful, more vibrant 1970s.

Perhaps not the prettiest decade, the period has certainly made an noticeable comeback on both the catwalk and on the high street - which is why you would be forgiven in thinking this isn't the first mention of it in this column this year.

But whereas last week I showcased a pair of kick flares from Topshop - this week I'm taking the inspiration a little less literally.

So far this series - or the latter half of the final run rather - there has been an obvious presence of chiffon (take Megan's nightgown-like ultra-ultra-mini dress in episode nine), checks (Peggy's power-dressing suit in episode eight) and empowering, figure-hugging bright numbers (the usual for Joan).

Head to New Look for its suitably-seventies orange and blue paisley print chiffon dress at £24.99.

This is a perfect start to a stylish and considered retro look, with a modestly high neck and long sleeves contrasted with its uber short length.

Match with sandals or pumps for a casual look, or pastel heels for something more formal.

If you're after something less Mad Men-secretary and a little more ad man house-wife, take a look at online retailer Boohoo's Betty Draper-esque grey print maxi dress at £25.

This long-and-wide-sleeved, sweeping floor length dress is ideal for making a statement.

For a unique festival look in the sun, team with ankle boots and a floppy hat.
