This season’s hottest ladies and gentlemen gathered in Los Angeles to mark the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG). And as predicted, we were dazzled by some of the eye-catching gowns that sparkled at the SAGs.

From Keira Knightley’s layered frock to Jennifer Aniston’s plunging neckline, here are the trend setters from Sunday night’s star-studded event.

1. Layered gowns

Pregnant Keira Knightley oozed every inch of the Hollywood glamour in this stunning purple lace Erdem gown.

2. Regal capes

A few months ago Solange Knowles was seen wearing a range of cape-themed outfits on her wedding day.

And it seems that this trend, inspired by fairytale princesses, is likely to continue as Joanna Newsom, Lorelei Linklater and Keltie Knight turned caped crusaders at the high profile event.

3. Optical illusions

As usual, all eyes were on Lupita Nyong’o – and her mesmerising striped Elie Saab gown with splashes of colour.

4. Chic lace

Lace can be tacky but Maisie Williams, Keira Knightley and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss are living proof that this delicate fabric is worthy of the red carpet.

5. Subtle prints

Rashida Jones’s Emanuel Ungaro gown is all about looking simple yet stunning. We hope to see more of this minimalist style this year.

6. Thigh splits

We have to thank Angelina Jolie as the pioneer of the great thigh reveal at 2012 Oscars, but the trend is still going strong three years later as Julianna Marguiles, Sophia Bush and Sufe Bradshaw keep it alive and kicking.

7. Off-shoulder glamour

Alysia Reiner and Caitriona Balfe provided dramatic inspirations with some off-shoulder fabric.

The Outlander actress looked superb in her saffron Solace London strapless number while and Alysia oozed retro glamour in a stunning red Christian Siriano gown.

8. Plunging necklines

And let us not forget about Jennifer Aniston, who put her gym-honed figure on display in a vintage Galliano gown with a plunging neckline.

9. Sheer delight

Emmy Rossum and Sarah Hyland show us how to rock sheer overlay and not look sickly sweet.

Emmy was breathtaking in her silver Giorgio Armani Prive number which was covered with Swarovski crystals, while Sarah’s embellished custom Vera Wang was just stunning.

10. Floral notes

We sincerely hope Natalie Dormer’s Naeem Khan dress and Selenis Leyva’s Bibhu Mohapatra gown with floral embroidery become this year’s floral trends.

11. Tailored jumpsuits

Not everyone can pull off a jumpsuit but 47-year-old Julia Roberts proved that age is no barrier as she stood out amongst her younger colleagues in a sleek Givenchy number. Move over Kendall Jenner.

12. Soft embellishments

Metallics could well be on their way out.

Julie Bowen’s embellished dress from Georges Hobeika Couture and Gretchen Mol’s jewelled Dennis Basso gown are the soft sparkles we hope will take off this year.

13. The cover-up

Charissa Thompson’s figure-hugging gown may not the most red-carpet friendly colour, but long sleeves are a great way to enhance the silhouette and look sexy without showing flesh. Just look at Clarissa.

Okay, those were the good ones but as we know, not everyone triumphed at the SAGs – and here are a few fashion lows we hope will end right here, right now.

1. Crochet horror

We love crochet, but Uzo Aduba’s lemon-yellow gown didn’t quite hit the fashion high stakes. And the darker lining underneath didn’t help either.

2. Metallic overdose

Laverne Cox’s dull metallic number sadly overwhelms her stunning figure.

3. Sheer gone wrong

Laura Carmichael rarely makes a fashion misstep. But the actress’s white Vionnet halter gown was a bit ill fitting, while the sheer fabric over the skirt made it all look a tad clumsy.

And Emma Stone’s tuxedo-inspired Dior Couture gown didn’t help further the cause of the hybrid gown trend that’s recently hit the fashion circuits.

4. Unwanted clashes

She may be the E! Fashion Police host, but showing off her her wild side in a leopard hi-low skirt and teaming it with the mohawk hairdo was way off the mark.

5. Too much fabric

Rosamund Pike’s Christian Dior Haute Couture frock, which came with a high-low hem, was less couture, more tent.

6. Dull white

Maggie Gylanhaal’s Thakoon dress was dull at best, and failed to show off her yoga-honed body.

Not even that plunging neckline could save this outfit from boredom.
