New serial killer drama Rellik was slated by viewers who complained that it was so dull and hard to follow that it almost put them to sleep.

Many said the BBC series – which sees the crime, like its name, told in reverse – was “confusing” and that its structure left them uncertain about what was going on.

One viewer posted on Twitter: “So dull. I keep forgetting I’m watching it and start daydreaming. I’ve rewound it at least 5 times now. I think it’s time to give up.”

Another said: “Another BBC drama where I have fallen asleep. Keep rewinding but still nodding off. #rellik.”

“Managed 23minutes before the confusing storyline and irritating dramatic music became too much! #Rellik #switchedoff #notforfurtherviewing,” said another disappointed viewer.

“Ah jaysus, this is fierce confusing!!!!” said another.

One moaned: “I do like Richard Dormer but #rellik has made me very confused & the going backwards business has made me nauseous.”

The series went head-to-head with new drama Liar, which started on ITV and was also in the primetime 9pm slot.

Both shows were written by brothers Jack and Harry Williams, who were behind The Missing.

It seemed some people regretted choosing Rellik over rape drama Liar, which had viewers gripped.

“Watched #Rellik but it was dreadful. Recorded #Liar and hope it’s a lot better,” said one person.

“Chose #rellik over #liar and I’m not feeling it,” admitted another.

One person joked on Twitter: “Chose #Rellik over #liar, now feel like @BBCOne sold me a #betamax!”
