Critically-acclaimed post-apocalyptic survival game The Last Of Us was the big winner at the British Academy Games Awards, picking up five honours.

Naughty Dog’s terrifying adventure won Bafta awards in the best game, story, audio achievement, action and adventure and performer categories at ceremony in London.

Regarded as one of the finest games ever to appear on consoles, the PlayStation 3 exclusive follows the story of Joel and Ellie as they struggle to survive 20 years after a pandemic wipes out civilisation as we know it.

In our review last June we said of The Last of Us: “It’s a shocking and unnerving experience that horrifies as much as it entertains, but it’s also one of the landmark titles of its generation which really stretches the boundaries of how the word game should be defined.”

The video game Baftas also proved to be a successful night for another PlayStation title, with quirky Vita platform game Tearaway from Media Molecule picking up three wins for artistic achievement, family and mobile & handheld.

Fergal Gara, MD of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, said: “There have been some amazing games released over the past year, and we're incredibly proud to have two of our exclusive games recognised in so many categories, and to have won so many awards is just fantastic.

"Tearaway and The Last of Us couldn't be more diverse in terms of themes and gameplay style, but at the heart of both games is a quality experience that we hope gamers will remember for a long time."

Other games honoured at the Baftas included Grand Theft Auto V, Bioshock Infinite and Fifa 14.
