Education - Dr Challoners Grammar School (Amersham). Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University (Law). Jesus College, Cambridge University (MA), won the Clive Parry Prize for International Law.

Previous Occupation - Worked for Linklaters, a law firm in the City as an International Lawyer. Worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (2000-06). Chief of Staff to the Shadow Home Secretary, the Rt Hon David Davis MP (2006-08). Chief of Staff to Dominic Grieve QC MP, Shadow Home Secretary then Justice Secretary (2008-2010).

Personal Overview - Selected as candidate for this safe Conservative seat in an open primary. In his career as a Lawyer, he worked on project finance, international litigation and competition law. He was also seconded to work at Liberty (the human rights NGO) and to Brussels advising on EU and WTO law. He also had wide ranging experience at the Foreign Office, including working at the Hague at an International Law department bringing war criminals to justice, such as Slobodan Milosevic, Radovan Karadzic and Charles Taylor. He also advised on the Arab-Israeli conflict, EU law and Gibraltar. He gained political experience as a Chief of Staff to both David Davis and Domonic Grieve, covering issues including crime, policing, prisons, criminal justice and constitutional reform. His political interests include the Middle East, an area where he has spent significant time, having spent a summer at Birzeit university (near Ramallah) and worked for one of the Palestinian negotiators involved with the Oslo peace accords to assess World Bank projects on the West Bank.

Characteristics - Has published a book 'The Assault on Liberty - What Went Wrong with Rights (Fourth Estate)' which criticised the Labour Government's record on human rights and argued for a British Bill of Rights. Has travelled in Europe, the US, Latin America and Asia. Was a Captain of his university karate team and boxed.

Previous Occupation - Worked in sales (1972-1980). Self-employed/Co-Director of a local business (1980-1999). Regional Liaison Officer for Caroline Lucas MEP (2002-2007).

Personal Overview - Replaced the outgoing Caroline Lucas here in June 2010 after she was successful in her bid to become the Green party's first MP at Westminster. He is an experienced Councillor, having led the Green Group in Brighton for a number of years. He has also shown an interest in foreign affairs issues, as a Councillor was active in campaigning to secure the release of Brighton resident Omar Degayes from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. He has also been involved in High Court action supporting families with Autistic children. Within the party, he has been a spokesperson on planning and regeneration as well as a Principal Speaker at the time when the party had not adopted a single leader. He has also been involved in policy development with the party election manifesto. Locally, he he is likely to have gained a good knowledge of his electoral region through his work for his predecessor.
