A final consultation on plans to extend the Northern Line to Nine Elms has been launched.

Transport for London is asking for people to submit their views on plans to create a tube station at Battersea Power Station.

They are also consulting on proposals to open another station on Wandsworth Road in Lambeth.

The extension forms part of the Nine Elms on the South Bank regeneration project, with the consultation taking place before TfL lodges a Transport and Works Act Order to start the work.

A consultation document gives detailed information about the proposed sites, which requires two permanent shafts and two temporary shafts to be built.

The shafts are needed to provide necessary ventilation, cooling and emergency access.

It is hoped the extension will give tube access to thousands of people while cutting journey times to the City by 15 minutes.

Wandsworth Council leader, Councillor Ravi Govindia, said: "This hugely important transport upgrade is the key that will unlock 25,000 new permanent jobs for London and billions of pounds in economic growth.

"Wandsworth and Lambeth Councils, TfL and HM Treasury are now working up the financing package which will include a huge contribution from the area’s private sector developers. This is a great piece of business for London."

Michèle Dix, managing director of planning for TfL, said: "We are really keen to hear what local residents and business have to say about our proposed plans for the Northern line extension before they are finalised."

A series of public exhibitions are being held at venues close to the route, with TfL staff on hand to answer questions.

About 40,000 households along the route of the proposed extension will also get a leaflet with details on the proposals.
