A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a pensioner was killed during a suspected burglary.

The 20-year-old man was arrested this morning and is in custody at a central London police station.

Joseph Lewis Griffiths, 73, of Hazlebury Road, off Wandsworth Bridge Road, suffered a violent attack and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers were called to the house just after 6am on Saturday after a burglary was reported.

Mr Griffiths was found to have suffered a violent attack and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem found he was fatally stabbed.

There were other people in the house at the time, but nobody else was injured.

Police have said they are retaining an open mind as to motive, but think Mr Griffiths could have disturbed an intruder.

Mr Griffiths was a married man with two grown up sons and seven grandchildren.

A statement released by his family said: "Joe was a husband, father and grandfather, he was a successful businessman who embraced life and lived it to the full.

"He took great pride in his business and it gave him immense satisfaction that three generations of the Griffiths family were employed there.

"Joe's sudden and tragic demise has shocked and saddened all who knew and loved him, and has left a great void in all our lives.

"Joe leaves behind a wife, two sons and seven grandchildren, who all completely adore and miss him."
