Ice-skaters can pirouette to their heart's content this weekend after Balham's eagerly-anticipated temporary ice rink opens.

Balham is marking its festive celebrations by offering visitors free skating on a specially-built ice rink in the Balham Community Space, (next to Sainsbury’s) on Bedford Hill.

Ice skating enthusiasts will be able to practice their Salchows, Lutzs and Axels for three days this weekend at the rink, which covers more than 60 square metres.

It will be open between 1pm and 8pm on Friday, December 14; 10am and 6pm on Saturday, December 15 and 11am to 6pm on Sunday, December 16.

The Christmas season will be officially launched this weekend with musical performances by the South London Choir, Balham Ukulele Society and the Chestnut Grove School Steel Band.

The events have been organised by the Balham Town Centre Manager, The Balham Partnership and Wandsworth Council and are supported by the Mayor of London.

Skates for the rink, which has been provided by Network Rail, will be available to hire free of charge but children under eight must be accompanied by an adult.
