A hospital wing remains closed after fire broke out this morning destroying a store room.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in a room close to the roof of St George's Hospital, in Blackshaw Road, Tooting, just after 9am this morning.

The fire was under control by 10.46am, but Grosvenor Wing and the medical school remain closed.

Appointments are still taking place as usual, while fire crews remain on site.

No patients were involved and the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Fire crews from Wimbledon, Clapham, Tooting, Battersea and Wandsworth attended, with six fire engines needed at the scene.

Peter Rickard, Tooting fire station manager, said: "The fire is under investigation and is being treated as non-suspicious.

"Everyone was evacuated, but no-one was injured. It was not a huge fire, but any call at a hospital we do take seriously."

A spokesperson for St George's Hospital said: "St George's Hospital's Grosvenor Wing has been closed today due to a fire in a second floor store room.

"The hospital has been open as usual and appointments are currently going ahead as scheduled.

"We expect Grosvenor Wing to be reopened later today. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation."

A hospital patient, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It was a bit confusing when I arrived as I was not sure if I had my appointment still.

"A man showed me where to go, there were lots of fire engines when I turned up."

Cranmere Terrace, in Tooting, was temporarily blocked following the fire, with buses on diversion.
