Official GCSE league tables released last week have shown a Wandsworth school to be one of the  the worst performing in inner London.

Battersea Park School achieved a pass rate of just 36 per cent, meaning just over one in three students received five or more A* to C grades at GCSE including Maths and English.

Deputy head teacher Kate Mahar said: "For 2009,10 and 11 the exam results for our students have been exceptional. However, the results for summer 2012 did drop, the main reason for this was the changes to grade boundaries for GCSE AQA English. This has had a significant impact on the school results."

She also pointed to the large percentage of pupils for whom English is a second language as a factor.

Changes in the boundaries from 43 for a C grade in January to 53 for a C in June in AQA Foundation English examinations last year resulted in many schools around the UK challenging their pupil's results.

The best performer at GCSE level in the borough was independent Putney High School where 100 per cent of their students achieved the pass rate, putting them in the top 80 schools in the country.

Graveney School, in Tooting, was the highest rated state school in the borough, with 79 per cent of GCSE students gaining passes in five or more subjects at A* to C level, including Maths and English.

Borough-wide, results dipped with 58 per cent of students achieving five good GCSE passes in 2012, compared with 62 per cent in 2011.

Putney High was also the highest performer at A/AS level with an average score per pupil of 961.9.

Ashcroft Technology Academy, in Wandsworth, managed to squeeze into the top three for A/AS Level results, pipping a number of independent schools, with a score of 867.

The lowest achiever at that level was Wandsworth town centre's South Thames College which scored 487.9.

A level points per pupil are calculated as follows: A* grade = 300 points, A = 270, B = 240, C = 210, D = 180, E = 150.

AS level grades are worth half (A* is 150, B is 120 etc).

For example, if a pupils gets ABC grades at A level, and a D at AS level. Their points total would be 270+240+210+90= 810.

The results were released by the Department for Education.
