A man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery on a cash-in-transit van outside a supermarket yesterday morning.

The robbery took place at 10.30am when a cash delivery driver was attacked outside the Co-op store in Tattenham Crescent, Epsom. 

South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene and treated the driver for facial injuries.

Police sealed off the area to carry out forensic checks and a car believed to be connected with the robbery was found in a nearby street shortly afterwards.

In the early hours of this morning a man in his 40s was arrested, at an address in the Nine Elms area of Battersea, in connection with the robbery.

He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to rob and possession of a firearm and is currently in police custody.

Detective Inspector Oana King said: "This was a frightening ordeal for the victim and those who witnessed it so I would appeal to anyone who has any information which may assist with the investigation to contact us as soon as possible as we need to catch the person responsible.

"We are still in the very early stages of the investigation so it is vital we gather as much information as possible on the offence and the offender and thank the public for their assistance and patience while we do this."
