More than 550 residents came to this month's Nine Elms Vauxhall open days to learn about the big changes now taking place in the north of the borough.

The open days took place in the grounds of Battersea Power Station which is one the major investment sites across the Nine Elms Vauxhall area.

Pupils from Chesterton and Sir James Barrie primary schools - both based in Battersea - took a day trip to the exhibition and were treated to a behind the scenes tour of the iconic power station building.

Two classes from Herbert Morrison primary school in Lambeth were also given an exclusive tour and a chance to quiz the power station team about their plans for the site.

The open day, held on July 11, included scale models of the regeneration plans and information about the area's new schools, parks, health centres, tube stations and town centres.

More than 100 visitors took the chance to register with Wandsworth and Lambeth councils' local jobs service which helps borough residents secure the new job, apprenticeship and training opportunities being created here.

Ravi Govindia, Leader of Wandsworth Council and co-chair of the Nine Elms Vauxhall Partnership, said: "This part of London is changing fast and bringing thousands of new jobs and affordable homes to Battersea. It's an extremely exciting project and will open up a whole new part of our borough.

"Local residents will benefit from a whole new town centre, two new tube stations, a new primary school and a lasting supply of job and training opportunities.

"Many local people are already working on the development sites and we have specialist jobs advisors on hand to help Wandsworth residents secure new positions.

"Nine Elms is a fantastic opportunity to build a career so make sure you take advantage."

The regeneration area includes parts of both boroughs and the two councils are working together to ensure local residents secure work on the project.
