An amenity society is calling on the council to ramp up its scheme for 20mph roads in residential areas.

Members of the Putney Society want Wandsworth Council to impose the limit on all residential streets across the borough.

The council is putting forward a model that will mean people can have the limit in their street if 25 per cent of its residents sign a petition.

But the Putney Society has said it would like to see a 20mph speed limit imposed on all roads, except main roads.

The society ran a survey in Fawe Park Road, Putney, and found 83 per cent of neighbours were in favour of having a 20mph limit.

David Irwin, the society’s transport convener, said it would be difficult for neighbours to find the time to come forward without a canvassing group.

He said: “They won’t do it unless someone goads them.

"Our position is that Wandsworth should go to consultation on this and should change their stance. Streets will be designated 20mph unless residents object.”

The Putney Society said it would also be confusing for drivers having to vary from street to street.

Camden and Southwark council have introduced a 20mph limit on all of their streets, while Lambeth has a restriction on all residential streets.

In November, a 20mph speed limit trial was introduced in the junction of where Dover House Road, Putney, meets Putney Heath.

During the two-week trial, traffic counters found 12 roads experienced traffic improvements, while less people were caught speeding.

A council spokesman said: “We want to give residents the final say over whether they have a 20mph limit in their streets or not and we will look to install them where there is clear local support.”
