Balham rapper explains Baby Blue nickname
MC and rapper Baby Blue hails from Balham. She speaks to Alexandra Rucki about her latest single Bump.
Why the name Baby Blue?
It was a nickname that stuck from when I was really young. It was my favourite colour and I used to wear baby blue from head to toe so people started calling me that!
How did you first get into MCing?
I was in school and some of my friends started a rap group and asked me to join. I went to the studio with them a few times and I loved it so I started writing my own songs and performing.
How would you describe your music?
It's very honest, I always write about things that I'm really going through and things that are really happening in my life. I don't really like to put myself in a box genre wise, but I love working with live instruments and music that can be played with a live band.
Estelle was your mentor when you first started out, what was it like working with her? Do you still stay in touch?
Yeah Estelle taught me a lot about music and the business when I was young. She really showed me my first experiences in the industry. I had so much fun on the road with her! I still speak to her sometimes but she lives in America so I don't see her as much.
What is the inspiration behind your latest track ‘Bump’?
It was inspired by a situation I was going through with an ex boyfriend. I felt betrayed by him and it's about the pain I felt in that situation. The best way for me to deal with issues in my life is to write about them.
What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
Getting into the top 40 chart with "Magnetic Eyes", I listened to the chart since I was young so that was a big achievement for me!
What is the music scene like in South London where you grew up? Any other artists you can recommend?
There are a lot of talented artists here. The scene is really growing. One artist who I think is going to be big is Cashtastic.
How did growing up in this area influence your career/music?
I met so many people in school and local studios who helped me build myself as an artist. But mainly it's my home and this area developed me so much as a person.
Where are your favourite places to go out in Balham and the surrounding area?
I like Exhibit in Balham and sometimes I go to Mint Bar in Streatham, and also Clapham has some good bars.
What else have you got lined up for 2013?
Promoting Bump which is out now, and another single before the end of the year. Also wrapping up my album and performing a lot all over the country.
