Final chapter for independent bookshops in Wandsworth
The final chapter is to end for the borough's independent booksellers.
Village Books Bellevue Road, Wandsworth, was forced to close on Sunday September 22 after seven years in Wandsworth.
Children's bookshop The Golden Treasury, in Replingham Road, Southfields, will also be closing as the owner is retiring while with My Back Pages, in Balham Station Road, Balham, is also closing this month.
Bolingbroke Books, in Northcote Road, Battersea was forced to shut up shop in March due to escalating business rates.
Hazel Broadfoot, co-owner of Village Books, said the business could not compete with websites like Amazon.
She said: "Sadly when the recession hit, we were losing sales to the internet.
"We would get people coming into the shop, writing book titles down and going buying them on the internet.
"It was very sad, we had lots and lots of people coming in to say goodbye. We had lots of children saying it was the best shop on the road.
"The commercial reality is we were not selling enough books to pay the rent."
Owners are now hopeful customers will make the journey to the other Village Books branch, in Carlton Avenue, Dulwich, which is still thriving.
A group of book-lovers is planning to set up a community run bookshop in Northcote Road to replace the loss of Bolingbroke Books.
It is hoped the co-operative will run from Northcote Library by next year, with a professional manager supported by volunteers.
Councillor James Cousins, cabinet member for economic development and business partnerships, said: "We are sad to see businesses going particularly in cases of bookshops.
"There are things the council have no control over, we will do what we can to help them out.
"We have a loan fund in the pipeline targeted at the smaller enterprises to help them survive and thrive in the competitive environment."
Chain bookstore Waterstone still runs a branch in Battersea and Southside Shopping centre, Wandsworth while many charity shops offer second hand books.
