New play Mucky Kid, debuting at Theatre503 this November, explores topics of child crime and protection of children.
The story unfolds around a young woman called Mae, who broke from prison where she has been from the age of 10, having become a national hate figure striving for a second chance.
Director and debuting playwright, Sam Potter, grew up in Norfolk, near a Category C prison, which suffered a spate of escapes in its first year. On becoming a parent, she struggled to understand why a child might murder another child.
In her search for answers, Potter interviewed ex-offenders and studied the cases of Mary Bell, Jon Venables and other young offenders, which she summed up in the new play directed by James Farrell.
