Wandsworth Guardian: Airport links to Clapham Junction to be improved says George Osborne Airport links to Clapham Junction to be improved says George Osborne

Clapham Junction could get a new direct rail connection to Heathrow and an improved link to Gatwick under plans announced by the Chancellor.

Proposals outlined in the Government’s 2013 National Infrastructure Plan could put the Battersea rail hub within 30 minutes of the UK’s two biggest airports.

Clapham Junction is also on the proposed Crossrail 2 route which would connect the station to the London Underground network.

The National Infrastructure Plan (NIP) also confirms the Government’s backing for the Northern Line extension with a £1bn borrowing guarantee.

This will create new Tube stops at Battersea Power Station and just off Wandsworth Road.

Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, said: "This is all great news for Battersea. It shows what can happen when a council spells out its ambition and sets about bringing all the parties together to make it happen.

"Major transport schemes like the Battersea Northern Line spur promote growth and improve connectivity. We are determined to achieve the best transport solutions for our residents and businesses."

Heathrow Rail Link: The 2013 National Infrastructure Plan (NIP) includes a commitment to investigate options for improving rail access to the airport from the south. A £1m study will now take place.

Brighton Main Line: The NIP commits the Government to investigating upgrades to the Brighton Main Line which connects Gatwick to Clapham Junction and London Victoria. Plans include a £50m redevelopment of Gatwick Station, a Network Rail study into capacity upgrades and ‘smart ticketing’.

Northern Line extension: NIP confirms the Government will back the Northern Line extension to Battersea with a £1bn borrowing guarantee. This follows the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and the Battersea Power Station developer signing a vital commercial agreement which clears the way for the Government guarantee to go through.
