Town centre improvements have continued as part of a multi-million pound street improvement project in Battersea.

The extensive project in Clapham Junction town centre has seen pavements widened, roads resurfaced, a new diagonal pedestrian crossing installed and the introduction of light granite paving slabs, improved lighting and new street furniture.

And in a separate development, a proposed pedestrian crossing close to the St John’s Hill entrance to the train station has now moved a step closer.

The council’s executive last week endorsed a proposal to seek necessary highway and traffic consents to establish the crossing at the Brighton Yard entrance.

Wandsworth Council's cabinet member for strategic planning and transportation, Councillor Russell King said all of the completed and proposed improvements were creating a much more attractive and pedestrian-friendly environment.

He said: "If we want our town centres to thrive then we have to keep investing in them - creating appealing shopping environments for residents, visitors and businesses alike.

"Many people have already benefitted from the changes and – given that Clapham Junction is one of the busiest stations around – I’m sure that many more will in the months and years to come, especially as more work is planned."

The final stages of the council’s street improvement project have recently seen improvements to St John's Road. Previous work saw changes to the St John’s Hill/Lavender Hill junction.

This involved a complete redesign of the busy crossroads outside Clapham Junction Station, which has improved traffic flow, widened pavements, increased cycle safety and allowed pedestrians to cross in one go, without stopping on islands.
