Work has now begun on a £117,000 scheme to provide young families in Tooting with a refurbished and modernised children’s centre.

Parents will soon be able to enjoy a wealth of family-oriented services in the newly designed Triangle children's centre on Tooting Common.

The revamped centre, which is due to reopen in the spring, will offer a daily full range of free children's and family services including drop-in stay and play, health advice and parenting support.

It will also benefit from better flood defences, as it is prone to localised flooding which in the past has meant it occasionally has to remain closed to local mums and dads.

Parents will also benefit from a closer integrated working with the nearby Faylands children's centre, ensuring that a wider and better range of family services are offered in this part of the borough.

Children's services spokesman Councillor Kathy Tracey said: "The refurbished Triangle centre will offer a really fantastic range of services to local families.

"It will also retain the very popular free drop-in stay and play sessions for the under-fives that local mums and dads care about so much.

"And the flood defence works we are carrying out mean that there should no longer be any disruption to these services from heavy rainfall accumulating on the common, which has been a problem in the past."

This investment in the Triangle comes just days after plans to spend £370,000 on providing a new-look children's centre in King George's Park were given the green-light.

And it comes on top of a £6m investment in early years education for two-year-olds from the borough's most disadvantaged families.

Around 1,800 free nursery places are being offered to these children as part of a landmark project to improve their education and development.
