The man killed after being struck by a bus outside Tooting Broadway station has been identified as Dennis McGoldrick.

Mr McGoldrick, of Mitcham Road, Tooting, was dragged under the wheels of a bus at a pedestrian crossing in Tooting High Street, Tooting, on Monday evening.

The London Ambulance Service pronounced him dead at the scene.

Horrified witnesses said they watched the 69-year-old walk out in the road while traffic was moving.

It has been suggested Mr McGoldrick was blind in one eye.

He was making his way from Balham when he was struck by the 131 bus turning from Mitcham Road into Tooting High Street.

Friend Gary Tracy said the pensioner was a regular in Wetherspoon pubs The Moon Under Water, in Balham High Street, and JJ Moons, Tooting High Street.

Mr Tracy said in an email: "I used to drink with Dennis at times on the weekends in Balham and Tooting. Dennis had been a very good friend of my father for over 20 years.

"Dennis was also virtually blind in one eye which may have contributed to him walking out on the road when he did."

He said Mr McGoldrick lived in Tooting for about 20 years and has a sister who lives in Canada.

Tooting councillors have described the pedestrian crossing as the most dangerous in Wandsworth.

Wandsworth Councillor James Daley said: "Most other junctions like this have already been redesigned, allowing pedestrians to cross safely from side to side or diagonally in one journey.

"Hopefully this tragic accident will prompt the mayor's transport team into action, so that we see a safer, redesigned junction before we see any more fatalities."
