The Environment Agency have issued a flood alert to residents living near the River Thames in Putney and the River Wandle in Wandsworth town centre.

Recent spells of wet weather are set to be compounded in the next few days with The Met Office warning of more heavy rain this weekend.

The forecast this afternoon and early evening will be fairly bleak but an eight hour spell of heavy rain is set to fall between 5am and 1pm on Saturday when alerted areas will face the most difficulty.

Putney Embankment and the immediate riverside area around it are the main points of concern as both locations have a history of heavy flooding.

In recent years Putney has been badly hit by heavy weather with gardens being flooded and cars being completely submerged on the riverbank.

The Environment Agency also points to Wandsworth town centre as another area likely to be affected by heavy rain because it is here that the River Wandle joins the Thames.

Flood alerts have also been issued along the Thames riverside in Battersea as well as along the route of the Wandle into south Wandsworth and Earlsfield.
