Staff at Wandsworth Prison took on the role of firefighters after an inmate set fire to his own cell.
No one was injured during the small fire but prison guards were on hand to extinguish it before the prisoner was checked over by hospital staff.
Crews from Battersea, Wandsworth and Tooting fire stations were called to the prison at 3am today, January 12, but the fire was already out.
Steve Goodman, white watch manager at Tooting Fire Station, said: “The prisoner was checked over by hospital staff and he was fine.
“It is not unusual. There have been a couple in the past week.”
A prison service spokesman said: “Staff at HMP Wandsworth quickly extinguished a small cell fire which started at about 2.59am on Sunday, January 12.
"The fire brigade attended as a matter of routine but no staff or prisoners were injured.
“An internal investigation will take place.”
