The fight to introduce a 20mph speed limit on all residential roads has been defeated.
Wandsworth councillors voted against a motion to introduce a 20mph default limit on all residential streets during a meeting on February 5.
The council currently operates a model which allows people to have the limit in their road reduced to 20mph if 25 per cent of its residents sign a petition.
Petitions from across the borough have been received, with Dover House Road, Putney operating the system for three years.
The council is consulting residents in Balham’s Bedford ward and Furzedown ward in Tooting to see if they also want the lower limit introduced.
Informal consultations are also being held with residents living in parts of Fairfield and East Putney wards.
Opposition councillors want to introduce a 20mph speed limit imposed on most streets, removing the need for expensive physical calming measures such as speed bumps.
