I thought I knew a bit about Moroccan food.

But a recent trip to Doukan, in Old York Road, Wandsworth, taught me there is far more to the cuisine than just cous cous and tabbouleh.

Wandsworth Guardian:

From the outside the restaurant looks just like your average venue, but as you step inside the surroundings transport you to a Moroccan palace.

My guest and I first sampled mint tea Martini's while perched on stools in the main bar, surrounded by shisha pipes, dim lighting and atmospheric music.

We were then shown to our seats in the back restaurant by the very friendly restaurant manager, Khalil.

Khalil waxed lyrical about Moroccan wine, a tipple I can't say I have ever tasted before.

Following his recommendation we went for a bottle of Ain Amhajir, a red wine with a fruity after-taste.

We began the meal with grilled halloumi, which had a lovely rubbery and gooey texture.

Wandsworth Guardian:

I was tempted to try a tagine, but when I saw duck on the menu I decided to see how the Moroccans would serve it.

It came with a red wine jus, potatoes as well as slices of beetroot and was full of flavour, while the meat was tender.

My guest sampled the Ketbane del Ghanmi - a chargrilled lamb cumin kebab served with chips.

The kebab was served on a skewer, with generous sized portions of meat.

I was stuffed to the brim, but still managed to find room for a desert.

The passion fruit creme brullee, served with tuille biscuits, was a Moroccan take on an old-classic and was very light.

Wandsworth Guardian:

Doukan is now opening it's doors on Sunday, serving a big spread of hot and cold nibbles for an alternative to a Sunday roast.

The restaurant offers exotic food, without being too off the wall, and is the perfect option for couples or large parties celebrating.
