More than 100 people turned out for the official launch of the FoodCycle event held in Tooting last Saturday.

The charity is tackling poverty by providing meals made from unwanted food and guests were treated to a three course feast.

Wandsworth Times:

Every week volunteers collect unwanted food from grocery stores and supermarkets such as Sainsbury's in Tooting High Street and use ingredients to create healthy three course meals.

The meals will be provided for people at risk of food poverty and social isolation, with a focus on people living in sheltered accommodation.

Saturday's event at Mushkill Aasan, in Upper Tooting Road saw guests served tomato and red pepper bruschetta, followed by a mushroom and pearl barley risotto with a delicious banana and fig pie for desert.

Volunteer Femi Akinola confirmed 126 meals were served from 150kg of saved food.

She said: "We had a good turn out which was representative of all members of our local community.

"Our oldest guest was 90-years-old and our youngest guest was 11 months. We are really pleased we had so much support from local businesses as well."

Tooting MP Sadiq Khan was at the event as well as Tooting councillors James Daley, Rex Osborn and Ben Johnson.

Mr Khan said: "Although I am saddened that today in Tooting many local people now have to rely on both the FoodCycle and the Wandsworth Foodbank for a healthy meal, I am very proud that we have such a compassionate community willing to support others in their time of need and help us to get to know each other better by eating together."

Dinners are served every Saturday between 1pm and 2.30pm.
